Megan Hughes Bio

Megan Hughes focuses on the areas of PTSD, chronic pain & illness and cognitive rehabilitation. She also treats anxiety, depression, relationship stress, grief & loss and emotional and behavioural issues of childhood and adolescence. She uses EMDR, Clinical Hypnosis, Cognitive/Behaviour therapy,  (Trauma Centre) Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) and body centred therapy primarily with adults and adolescents. Megan is skilled at creating a safe environment in which clients can explore their feelings and gain insights and make connections into their personal patterns.

Megan has had varied professional experiences in the counselling field, in both private and public realms. For many years Megan worked with children with a variety of diagnoses and behavioural challenges in the Vancouver School District. She worked pro bono for children of immigrants who witnessed or experienced violence at VAST, and as a Peer Counsellor Trainer and as a  Counsellor to clients with terminal illness at Friends for Life. She has worked for Vancouver Coastal Health in a Mental Health Office as a Child and Family Therapist. Her interests and professional experiences are varied, and she prefers to treat all ages across a wide range of issues. Her broad experiences and knowledge enrich her proficiency to treat a variety of clients.

Beyond her Master’s degree from UBC, Megan Hughes has undergone lengthy supervision with Registered Psychologists to gain valid expertise in both the area of youth focused therapy and attachment, Imago couple therapy, and in the area of chronic pain and chronic illness. She achieved Registration with the College of Psychologists of BC, where her designation is Registered Psychology Assistant, and as a member of the BC Psychological Association. Her continued commitment to honing her skills across a range of areas provides a more complete counselling experience.

Megan Hughes has certification in the field of Cognitive Rehabilitation, as her work with chronic pain clients frequently overlaps with recovery from sustained injuries involving memory, attention, executive functioning and social communication. Her certification is through the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine.

She has also recently begun to incorporate yoga practices in her work with clients with chronic pain and trauma. She has completed a course in Trauma Sensitive Yoga through the Trauma Centre (TCTSY) at the Justice Institute in Brookline, Massachusettes, as well as completed Yoga for Chronic Pain Instructor Certification through Semperviva Yoga Studio.

Megan Hughes also has certified training in Imago Therapy for couples, individuals and parents. Her training was from the Imago Relationships International organization, with master Imago therapists.

Along with her previous certifications in EMDR, Clinical Hypnosis and CBT, she continues to gain certification in new therapeutic techniques to provide a broader wealth of strategies and insights to the sessions. She stays current in the knowledge in her fields, and contributes her own research to publishing journals.
